We Say Goodbye to Sean Clifford

Sean Clifford close up (Clarence Eckerson Jr.)

Today we wish one of our own the greatest of luck as Sean Clifford departs StreetFilms in pursuit of the lights, glamour and (gulp!) gridlock of Los Angeles to pursue a film career. Sean produced quite a few videos for us here, especially notable is this video on Grand Army Plaza which may one day serve as a historical document chronicling when neighbors stood up to demand changes to make it safer. This year the NYC DOT is doing just that. Hooray for everybody!

This leaves us down one videoperson. Very shortly we will be posting our job opening for what we are calling a Transportation Activist Video Guru. If you know plenty about film and transportation activism, we urge you to apply. So check back shortly on how to do that (until then please no e-mails or questions regarding the position, we will not be answering them.)

Count Cars Breaking the Law in Prospect Park! (2:47)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Almost every time Doug Gordon visits Prospect Park he sees vehicles entering illegally after it is closed to cars at 7 pm. It made him mad, so he got out his video camera.

StreetFilms obtained the footage he took on June 20th near the 3rd Street/P’Park West entrance and truncated it into this enlightening bit. Count along as dozens of drivers break the law!

We think Doug is awesome and we whole-heartedly encourage more concerned citizens to act constructively to highlight what is going on in their community.

Make Music New York (3:18)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

For your enjoyment here are some of the sounds and melodies from over 500 musical acts on the sidewalks of Gotham yesterday. We were one of 300 cities celebrating the longest day of the year enveloped in sound.

The first annual Make Music New York is based upon France’s Fete de la Musique, and was organized by Aaron Friedman.

Yesterday, I lugged around my video equipment by bike, rode nearly 30 miles and endured two nasty thunderstorms. It was so much fun. Next year, ride a bike. Trust me on this.

London driver Barny Crocker offers up some anecdotes about Congestion Charging.

“…there is definitely less traffic in London since the Congestition Zone came into existence. And it is easier to get around if you do go in the zone…”

StreetFilms thanks Barny and cameraperson Anu Gopalakrishnan for sending this along.

Tour de Brooklyn 2007 (3:25)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

This year’s 3rd annual Tour de Brooklyn was a special treat as New York City DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan rode the entire event with over 2,000 enthusiastic cyclists.

The excursion covered 18 miles and started in Grand Army Plaza, headed down 4th Avenue to Bay Ridge, then stopped in Dyker Heights for a respite before returning back to Prospect Park. As always with the TdB, the emphasis is on friends, family, and fun.
