It’s the holiday season and of course that means time for the city’s annual Gridlock Alert Days. What does that really mean?

Well, we went out on the traffic-choked streets of Brooklyn with Streetsblog’s editor Aaron Naparstek to talk to drivers to find out and see how they feel about Congestion Pricing and a whole host of other transportation issues.

Illustrating Parking Reform with Dr. Shoup (5:10)

On his recent visit to New York, Dr. Donald Shoup, professor of Urban Planning at UCLA, sat down with Mark Gorton of the Open Planning Project in front of a typical NYC street grid map to discuss parking policy.

Shoup concludes that charging more for curbside parking would free up more parking space, reduce congestion-causing cruising and generate funds for local street improvement projects.

Astor Playa 2007: TOPP at Burning Man (6:22)

In the summer of 2007, friends, colleagues and employees of The Open Planning Project traveled to Black Rock City Nevada for the annual Burning Man Festival, bringing with them a piece of New York City re-imagined. Astor Playa, was a radical re-imagination of the historical Astor Place freed from the constraints of traffic, commercialism and city planning that favors cars over people.

Ciclovia: Bogotá, Colombia (9:41)

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel with comrades Karla Quintero (Transportation Alternatives) and Aaron Naparstek (Streetsblog) to Bogotá, Colombia to document some of the amazing advances going on in the livable streets movement there. On Sunday we spent the entire day - from 5 AM ’til nearly 5 PM - riding bicycles around the city courtesy of the Ciclovia, a weekly event in which over 70 miles of city streets are closed to traffic where residents come out to walk, bike, run, skate, recreate, picnic, and talk with family, neighbors & strangers…it is simply one of the most moving experiences I have had in my entire life.
