Snackin’ & Schwag for Cyclists in Queens (2:55)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

If it’s Bike Month, then Transportation Alternatives must be hosting their annual commuter pit stops with help from NYC DOT and the five Boro President’s offices. Yesterday, it was a Queens afternoon snack and we thought we’d take the pulse of cyclists departing the QBB as they got some rehydration and filled their packs with literature (and mega safety schwag!) If you missed out, check the Bike Month calendar for future goodie giveaways and swing back here as we cover events all month long.

Tuesday night it was standing room only as hundreds turned out for the NYC Streets Renaissance’s event with Jan Gehl at the Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side.

Here we present a very brief recap featuring many voices in the community and sound bites of what some Upper West Siders would like to see happen on their streets.

PARK(ing) Day NYC 2007 (6:22)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

National PARK(ing) Day was a huge hit here in NYC where Transportation Alternatives & The Trust for Public Land organized a of group of motley advocates in liberating parking spaces to open green areas for city residents to enjoy. Last year, NYC had just one spot, but this year nearly two dozen were sponsored across the city - ranging from a mini-gym on Bedford Avenue in Brooklyn to a tribal village (complete with tee pee!) on Manhattan’s West Side.

Parking Day photoMost amazing was the overwhelmingly positive response the event received. Residents, tourists, commuters, and drivers (yes drivers!) were seen voicing approval. Peds relished the chance to take a seat or diddle their feet in fresh sod. Some ate pizza. Yum!

Icons of a Living City (1:05)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Icons of a Living City is a trio of uplifting posters from Transportation Alternatives encouraging New Yorkers to walk, bike, and take mass transit.

We here at StreetFilms love ‘em and their positive vibe. So much so, we got our hands on some high resolution files to present some of the fine details in what might be the first of its kind: a one minute commercial for posters!

T.A. partnered with Sustainable South Bronx, Straphangers Campaign, and Project for Public Spaces to produce the set. The artist is Kevin Nierman. Posters should be available for purchase on the T.A. website in the near future.
