Snackin’ & Schwag for Cyclists in Queens (2:55)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

If it’s Bike Month, then Transportation Alternatives must be hosting their annual commuter pit stops with help from NYC DOT and the five Boro President’s offices. Yesterday, it was a Queens afternoon snack and we thought we’d take the pulse of cyclists departing the QBB as they got some rehydration and filled their packs with literature (and mega safety schwag!) If you missed out, check the Bike Month calendar for future goodie giveaways and swing back here as we cover events all month long.

Roller Race for Queens (3:08)

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Have you ever wished you could explore the borough of Queens on a bike with a large group of people? Maybe you have heard of or ridden in the Tour de Brooklyn or the Tour de Bronx and thought it would make sense for Queens to have a ride of its own? Hold your breath, no longer. The first annual Tour de Queens is planned for June 8, 2008!

Last week, the Transportation Alternatives’ Queens Committee hosted a fundraising Roller Race at the Creek & Cave bar. Watch this short video and find out what exactly a roller race is. If you would like get more info on the Tour de Queens and the Queens Volunteer Committee, contact: Mike Heffron.

The Power of Making Your Own StreetFilm

Congestition Jackson HeightsPeople across NYC are fed up with traffic in their neighborhoods and are getting motivated to make their own StreetFilms.

Will Sweeney and Kozo Okumura from Jackson Heights did. Check out this comprehensive video they sent us showing a laundry list of neighborhood items the Queens group the Western Jackson Heights Alliance is upset about. Of course traffic and transportation are right there at the top.

Will writes:

We put together the video because we wanted to show how visceral the problem is on a daily basis. The problem of traffic congestion has so many side effects that are difficult to communicate in words or still images. Also, most residents would cite noise as the main complaint, particularly horn honking.

Honking is right. (Hint: You might want to turn down the volume towards the end!)

Will and Kozo are part of a growing group of neighborhood documentarians who are realizing video is the way to go. Just last month Doug Gordon was so fed up with cars illegally entering Prospect Park after hours he shot this great video. Ian Dutton of Community Board 2 in Manhattan has been gathering evidence like this he uses to convince his neighbors that we need more bicycling facilities.

So how about you? It doesn’t take much these days. You don’t need a great camera, just some patience and a steady hand. Check out some of our tips, then send us your StreetFilms to post!

Let’s go Mets! Let’s go bikes!

The StreetFilms team cycled with over 100 baseball fanatics during Bike Week on an amazin’ jaunt to Shea Stadium. The 4th annual ride was organized by the NYC Department of Transportation and the great spirits at Transportation Alternatives provided the valet bike parking.
