Life Near the QBB

Sarah Gallagher from the Upper Green Side introduces Streetfilms to some of the dangers of living near the Queensboro bridge. Talking to store owners, and others in the area, we learn there is another high cost of doing business in the area other than rent.

"There's never a quiet time anymore. And there's never a clean time anymore. And there's never a safe time...it's always traffic first."

Sheldon Barr - Gallery Owner

Just, I think that we just have more people in the metropolitan area in general. And as New York, its reputation as a safe place to be I think you’ve got many more people driving in. And of course we’re close to the 59th Street bridge, so we’ll inevitably wind up getting a huge amount of spill off from that. You can’t depend on it ever being like the traffic. Oh that’s interesting. Oh look at those guys, he’s doing the same thing, he’s going over the fence to get to the walkway.

[music]

Sheldon Barr: [01:14] When I first opened the gallery 13 years ago, the bridge was closed for restoration. And it was fantastic. For about eight months there was absolutely no traffic at all here. And then one day the bridge opened and this horde of trucks and taxis and beeping cars came marauding down the street, and they never, ever stop, day and night. We have to clean the shop two or three times a week because of the filth that comes in from these trucks. When the taxis come across bridge, well they all come across the bridge without fares, and so in order to get the fares first they come barrelling across the bridge, they often lose control, that’s happened three or four times in my memory, slamming into store fronts, breaking store windows, break, crashing into the trees, knocking down the trees. There’s never a quiet time anymore. And there’s never a clean time anymore. And there’s never a safe time anymore. It’s always traffic first.

Sorawat Ruangamporn: [02:08] This is my restaurant, Luscious Thai, and you see the new door. We have to change the new door because it’s like a month ago my door was hit by a taxi. The police report, one taxi just lost control, just ran between the metre and the tree and hit my door, four o’clock in the morning. And I got a phone call from the police, something happened on my restaurant.

George Mastrogiannis: [02:38] They fly around this corner, and a lot of times when the cars are coming down and you’ll see cars racing from the top of the street just to make the light. I don’t feel like they’re aware of you. They’re aware of you when you’re in their way.

Sarah Gallagher: [02:58] I think that people realise that whatever magic solution was supposed to solve traffic problems in this part of the city, it’s just… it’s not going to happen by any of the traditional methods. And that we really have to start looking at rapid buses, bikes, really making it better for pedestrians to get around. If the city is going to have a million more people, the Upper East Side, with all of the construction that’s going on here, I mean I can’t imagine we’re not going to two to three hundred thousand more people. And a lot of them are obviously going to be financially able to have cars and we don’t want them being in their cars here.

[music]

http://transcriptdivas.ca/transcription-canada/
