Mayor Bloomberg & Friends Announce “Summer Streets”

A large heaping of news media and livable streets advocates converged at Astor Place for the Mayor's presser to make the official announcement of "Summer Streets." Essentially the plan opens Park Avenue to pedestrians and cyclists from 72nd thru to the Brooklyn Bridge (using other connectors) on August 9th, 16th, and 23rd from 7 AM to 1 PM!

On hand with the Mayor were Lance Armstrong, David Byrne, Janette Sadik-Khan and Scott Stringer and we've included wonderful quottage from them all. And by the way, Lance may be the 7 time Tour de France winner, but we found an interesting "7" theme running throughout the proceedings. (Yes, we had a little fun.)

Mayor Mike Bloomberg: [00:00] On three consecutive Saturdays in August, the 9th, 16th and 23rd, we’re going to open this North/South corridor to recreation from 7am to 1pm.

Janette Sadik-Khan: [00:15] For many of us our streets are really our front yards, and this new initiative will allow us to enjoy them free of vehicles. It’s been very successful in other cities, as the Mayor mentioned, Bogota, Paris, London. I was in Bogota earlier this year and saw the success that they’ve had there. They close the streets there every Sunday all year round and they have about a million and a half people that come out each and every Sunday for that event.

Lance Armstrong: [00:41] This is a real… a real step for a city like New York City to come along and close major streets to allow people to get out on their bikes. And again it could be for exercise, it could be a young boy, a young girl who just simply for the first time gets on their bike and they’re away from mum or dad.

David Byrne: [00:58] There’s been huge changes in 30 years since I started riding around the Lower East side on an old bicycle. And… but I think this is a real tipping point. This is really going to make the city a more enjoyable place to live.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg: [01:14] We have to try different things if we’re going to keep this city vibrant and interesting. We also have to stop talking about global warming and actually do something. I can’t tell you this is going to make a big difference, but it says to people some of the ways to get around.

Janette Sadik-Khan: [01:29] People can walk, dance, play, stretch, from Brooklyn Bridge to 72nd Street and then connect to Central Park and the Hudson River greenway. We have some fabulous sponsors already for this event. Crunch Gym that’s provide financial support and will be providing aerobics and dance classes. Bicycle Habitat who’s also providing financial support and is going to be doing important bike repair along the route.

Scott Stringer: [01:53] And you should also know that DOT was right on this, meeting with our office and I’m going to announce a moratorium on come fetching for this event in my… I’m signing intro, whatever Borough Presidents do, so that no complaining before the event and then we’ll meet with everybody after the event. But let’s go have a great time this summer. Thank you.
Transcription Sponsored by: Transcript Divas Transcription Services
