Brooklyn resident Kimberly White is just finishing her freshman year of college, and she took some time away from studying for exams and writing papers to be the second cyclist in our MY NYC Biking Story series. Kimberly not only loves riding her red folding bike in Prospect Park, but she's also got the skills to fix it. She helped start an internship program at bike shop, Recycle-A-Bicycle, and has used that experience to encourage others to get in the saddle. She was the key note speaker at the first annual Youth Bike Summit, which she helped organize after being inspired by the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC. She is pursuing a career in environmental justice.

[00.12] I learned how to ride a bike about a year ago, so I still feel
like I’m a baby cyclist. I usually bike here in Prospect Park
because I love to feel the wind whipping across my skin, it’s a really
great feeling. I’m a freshman at Baruch College and I’m focusing
on environmental justice and I feel that being a biker fits into my
mission of becoming a more sustainable person, a more sustainable student.
I initiated an internship programme at Recycle-A-Bicycle. We decided
that we would have to do something to get more youth involved in cycling,
enabling them to see how empowering becoming a cyclist could be, so
we decided to do the youth bike summit. And it was a really exciting
experience being able to talk about being a young biker. Don’t
be afraid of learning how to ride a bike, no matter how old you are,
because at first I was really embarrassed because I was 16 or 17 and
my little sister knew how to ride a bike since she was three, so I think
that the most important thing to do is to realise that anyone can become
apt at riding a bike. I’m really excited about the installation
of over 250 new miles of bike lanes in New York City. That makes
me feel very confident. It’s financially sustainable, it’s
environmentally sustainable, it’s just great. </font> <br>
