Five Eclectic Questions for Streetfighter Janette Sadik-Khan

Right before former New York City Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan set off on a multi-city book tour for Streetfight (along with co-author Seth Solomonow), I was able to get a few minutes to ask her five eclectic questions in Washington Square Park.

Want to know the story behind the appearance of hundreds of cheap lawn chairs on opening day in car-free Times Square? We asked her. Want to know if she has a crush on David Byrne? We asked her that too! Want to know her favorite color jellybean? Well, we didn't ask her that.

But we think you'll enjoy our quick, engaging conversation that's saturated with footage from the Streetfilms vault from Sadik-Khan's 2007-2013 tenure at NYC DOT.

Corona Plaza: One of the Best Pedestrian Spaces in NYC Gets a Big Boost!

Streetfilms Shortie - Dancing in Corona Plaza from Streetfilms on Vimeo.

Mega-wowsers! Today out in Corona Plaza there was a big press event to announce an $800,000 donation from JPMorgan Chase Foundation to the Neighborhood Plaza Partnership which goes to help fund the upkeep of ped plazas in low-income neighborhoods. Streetsblog has the full story, so I am not gonna re-hash the important bits, I'm just gonna post some nice photos for you to soak in.

That fun video clip above of kids jumping up and down was a spontaneous celebration. I love this plaza. If you haven't seen my original video from last year's opening days, I am requiring you to watch it - so click here.

Citi Bike Debuts in New York City!

Memorial Day 2013 marked a milestone in NYC transportation history: the debut of the city's bike-share system, Citi Bike. At 330 stations, 6,000 bikes (of a planned 10,000) were available to more than 13,000 members who signed up for a yearly pass - and many of them couldn't wait to hit the streets!

The press conference at City Hall was a media frenzy. Hundreds of reporters and cameras were on hand to watch Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan ring in the launch. Streetfilms was there at this historic moment and put together this fun four-minute film which features a Citibike bike share station along a protected bike lane, David Byrne telling us what he will do with bike share and the best shot anyone got of Commissioner Sadik-Khan test driving the bike at City Hall.

Mayor Bloomberg & Friends Announce “Summer Streets”

A large heaping of news media and livable streets advocates converged at Astor Place for the Mayor's presser to make the official announcement of "Summer Streets." Essentially the plan opens Park Avenue to pedestrians and cyclists from 72nd thru to the Brooklyn Bridge (using other connectors) on August 9th, 16th, and 23rd from 7 AM to 1 PM!

On hand with the Mayor were Lance Armstrong, David Byrne, Janette Sadik-Khan and Scott Stringer and we've included wonderful quottage from them all. And by the way, Lance may be the 7 time Tour de France winner, but we found an interesting "7" theme running throughout the proceedings. (Yes, we had a little fun.)

David Byrne Celebrates NYC Bicycling in Style

Last night, I was one of 1200 lucky ticket holders attending "How New Yorkers Ride Bikes" a David Byrne presentation at Town Hall as part of the 2007 New Yorker Festival. Stuffed with laughs, entertainment, and bicycle inspiration, it was hard not to be psyched about the current state of cycling in NYC. In fact, my pyschedness level is off the charts!David Byrne yellow

Of course our MC for the night, Mr. Byrne, who has been using a bike for transportation for 30 years, pedaled to the theater. In fact, the night started with helmet cam footage he shot as he biked thru Times Square to the venue. Some Byrne-musings which drew the most applause/ laughter as he navigated the entanglement of peds, cars, and street furniture included: "...once you get used to it, riding thru the city gives you a nice jolt of energy", "42nd Street would make a nice pedestrian mall", and probably the biggest laugh-getter, "if this was a bike lane, there would probably be a truck from New Jersey parked in it."

Mr. Byrne, dressed in black and sporting his cool taxi-yellow bike helmet (see our previous StreetFilm here) then rode onto the stage and locked up. Moments later Hal Ruzal, NYC bicycling icon and mechanic at Bicycle Habitat, emerged from behind a curtain to pick his lock with a variety of tools. Mr. Ruzal's advice on not getting your bike stolen? "Have a bicycle lock that is real expensive, and a bicycle that's really cheap." True dat.

David Byrne’s Bike STOLEN!

Sad news to report...David Byrne's bike has been taken by a cowardly thief!! Dang!

You may ask yourself, "Who would do such a thing?" Unfortunately, those of us in NYC know it is all too common. In fact if you've only had one bike stolen, consider yourself lucky.

Click here to see our famous StreetFilm of the former Talking Heads front man in happier times riding his bike with Enrique Peñalosa last year.

Sometimes we get to have a little fun...

On the morning of Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer's historic "Manhattan on the Move" transportation conference, our hero Enrique Peñalosa met up with the staff of Transportation Alternatives to ride up to the event.

Look how handsome all those well-dressed advocates are! And who is that with them? Special guest star: David Byrne from The Talking Heads!
