Raised Crosswalk

This stop-animation Streetfilm illustrates the advantages of adding a raised crosswalk.

Raised crosswalks are Speed Tables outfitted with crosswalk markings and signage to channelize pedestrian crossings, providing pedestrians with a level street crossing. Also, by raising the level of the crossing, pedestrians are more visible to approaching motorists.

Raised crosswalks are good for locations where pedestrian crossings occur at haphazard locations and vehicle speeds are excessive.

How to use a Bike Box

The NYC DOT has been quietly rolling out dozens of bike boxes all over Gotham. (*Update: Official number is 60!) It's really quite remarkable. But since the majority of riders seem not to know what they are or how to use them just yet, StreetFilms thought this would be a fun way to educate cyclists to love and cherish the Bike Box.

*Addendum: Apparently so few New Yorkers know about bike boxes that even the New York Times screwed up in an article about Portland, Oregon installing new bike boxes!

"...the boxes, believed to be the first such to be put to use by any city in the country, will make cyclists even safer and more comfortable on the street, biking advocates and transportation officials say."

They should really check in with StreetFilms more often.

Street Transformations – Upper West Side

Here you'll find StreetFilms' video manipulation of the excellent work of the NYC Streets Renaissance Creative Director, Carly Clark, who has produced photosims of a few streets on Manhattan's Upper West Side - showing the potential for them to become more people-oriented.

Photosims are a valuable tool for empowering communities to see the potential of their neighborhoods to be more than just conduits for car traffic. The dramatic before & afters re-imagining Amsterdam as a complete street, a traffic-calmed 81st Street, and a car-free Broadway are the types of bold ideas that will be discussed at Tuesday's November 6th event to promote safe livable streets.

We went back to check in how things were progressing on the NYC DOT's plans for the 9th Avenue physically separated bike lane. The pleasant surprises continue as lane improvements, ample signage, and cyclist-only bike signals have now appeared making the innovative project even safer. And although driver behavior continues to improve, there are a few problems to highlight.

Ninth Avenue Gets a Physically Separated Bike Lane

With Ninth Avenue getting a physically-separated cycle track, The NYC Department of Transportation has set the bar high for the nation. Though the innovation is still being rolled out - eventually there'll be green pedestrian refuges, exclusive light signals for cyclists, signage, stencils and more - that didn't stop StreetFilms and the cycling denizens of Gotham from using it today. Looks good!

Even not complete, drivers seemed to generally get the idea. Lots of smiling riders; food delivery specialists seemed to really get a real kick out of it.

I am sure the debate will begin. Good, let it. Also, a special thanks to Au Revior Simone for lending us a tune to celebrate this happy occasion.

Paint a Parking Lot, Put Up a Paradise

In the Brooklyn DUMBO neighborhood the NYC Department of Transportation has launched the first of over thirty projects that will transform city streets over to public space uses.

What once was a triangle on Pearl Street for about two dozen car parking spots has become an oasis of green complete with chairs, tables, umbrellas and art. DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan called the space, "a new living room for the neighborhood." Although the subway can be a little clanky in the shadow of the Manhattan Bridge, we think that comment couldn't be more perfect.

The rapidity of the implementation of this project took even us by surprise, but with Mayor Bloomberg's push to put more green and open spaces within proximity of our abodes it's nice to see swift progress. So here are the dramatic befores, afters, and overheads that we are surely will cajole other neighborhoods to beg for living rooms in their communities. Of course, StreetFilms strongly encourages this behavior.

Portland, Ore. – Festival Streets

The Portland Office of Transportation (PDOT) recently completed work on two Festival Streets, a new experiment that uses traffic calming and unique streetscape features to create a street that can easily be converted to public use on weekends or for special events. Here, Ellen Vanderslice (PDOT Project Management) and Lloyd D. Lindley (Urban Designer/Landscape Architect) explain a few of the street's pedestrian features and why it is so important for the surrounding Old Town/Chinatown community.

PARK(ing) Day San Francisco 2006

In San Francisco, the REBAR group organized a mass reclamation of automobile parking spaces to provide temporary green space for pedestrians to enjoy.

Over two-dozen parking spots were liberated. Some were transformed into lush, green creations complete with sod, trees and benches. Other organizations experimented with the idea, creating eclectic installations like artwork, benches and gardens One such space even features a self-serve lemonade stand!The event also included participation from groups outside San Francisco, including some from New York City.
