Five Great Streetfilms You May Have Missed! So Watch ‘Em Now!

Since we have over 500 Streetfilms, invariably there are some I thought deserved far more viewers then they ultimately got. And some of these I really enjoyed working on or believed are important to see. Since I was recently asked which of my Streetfilms I wished had gotten more play, I decided to look over the past 7 years and pick out the Top Five that deserved to be seen some more. If you are new, you should check them all out.

1. Via RecreActiva: A Transformative Ciclovia for Guadalajara (Jan 2012):  This is the one I always cite as one I thought was gonna rack up mega views and never did.  In fact it only got about 2K in its first few months. I was stunned. Perhaps by the time we debuted it, people already knew enough about Ciclovias and just didn't need another.  This is one of the most magical open streets events in the world and the energy should be experienced.

2. Queens’ Corona Plaza: A Community Place Rises (August 2012): Maybe it's because this plaza is so near and dear to my heart only a few miles away from my home in Jackson Heights. But the wonderful people who have helped make this plaza happen against many odds deserve a lot of credit. It looks different from the plazas you'll find in Times Square and all over Manhattan. You should watch. Now.

3. GOP Mayor Greg Ballard: Making Bicycling a Priority in Indianapolis (June 2013):  This mayor is a huge believer in cycling. I see his personal tweets talking about it constantly. He has toured the country talking about the Indianapolis Cultural Trail (that video DID perform  amazingly). But Mayor Ballard is also a Republican. We need more in his party to talk like he does about transportation. This quick profile on him has been amazingly under viewed.

Re-Introducing Zozo, our Lovable Livable Streets Hero!

Back in the Summer of 2010, the Streetfilms crew shot & edited ten wonderful vignettes starring Zozo, a purple Henson-designed creature, for the now-defunct Livable Streets Education. It was a great team effort from our colleagues Kim Wiley-Schwartz and Rebecca Jacobs as well as the hugely talented folks we partnered with to write and plan them. It's still one of the best times I have ever had as a camera person.

Each short was designed to teach children about the environment we live in and why walking, bicycling and taking transit is so important. They're great tools to use not only in a classroom-type setting, but for adults to introduce to their own children the livable streets world in a fun way.

However, due to various circumstances, the vignettes never got quite the publicity we desried them to. Thus this year I am going to be promoting them whenever I can. Until now, the films have only appeared on the Meet Zozo site but we have added them officially to Streetfilms in the hope that our fans will take to Zozo.

If you want to help promote or use the Zozo shorts, here are some things you can do:

1. Watch the videos on Streetfilms or Meet Zozo. Tell your friends about Zozo on Twitter & Facebook and make sure you reference us.

2. If you click on the Vimeo button, you can download the films for FREE to show your kids, their friends, your classroom, fellow advocates, etc.

3. If you want to go even further, there are even Zozo coloring book sheets you can download here and explore  the Meet Zozo site to see sample lessons that were prepared by Livable Streets Education.

4. Check out Streetfilms' pretty awesome mini-doc that started it all, The Search for the Zozo!

WTF?! “The Lorax” Gives Mazda “The only Certified Truffula Tree Seal of Approval”

Can you believe this?  Does this get you riled up? You need to take a gander at this new commercial for Mazda's CX-5, an advertising partner for Universal Pictures Dr. Suess' "The Lorax". It's the latest, most outrageous act of Hollywood greed.

"Certified Truffula Tree Friendly"?! I can't tell you how sick that "endorsement" makes me.

Back when I was 5 years old, "The Lorax" tv special first aired in 1972.  It was a powerful environmental message that I believe helped shape who I've become today.  Yes, sure I'd rather have more cars be as environmentally friendly as possible, but that is not the point here and to allow Mazda to sponsor THIS film is just plain blasphemy.

Universal Pictures and the films producers have completely made a mockery of Dr. Seuss' work.  Seriously.

What do you think?

Meet Zozo! (Official Website Launch)

Today we are happy to announce that Zozo, our purple, livable streets mascot finally has his own website!  Just go to www.meetzozo.com to check out all ten of the Zozo shorts - including films about walking, biking, car sharing and transit as Zozo walks the streets of Park Slope in Brooklyn, NY.

It's very educational for the youngest ones in your home, but it's also about Zozo being his Zozo fun self and there's lots in here that will make the adults smile too. Our staff here at Streetfilms shot & edited all of these and here we present you with a funny montage featuring outtakes and other fun moments that didn't make the cut.  As you will see, Zozo is a charmer.

Zozo wants you to Walk to School!

For those of you who do not yet know him - meet Zozo!  He's Livable Streets' big purple friend who loves anything that gets people out of cars and moving about the streets.  You might find him riding his ZoGo along the new PPW bike lane, sitting out in the pedestrian plaza in Union Square or catching the 4 train to amble about the city.  Or right here on Streetfilms in the next few months as he talks about the best "Way to Go!"

So, what better way to mark this year’s International Walk to School Day on October 6th, than to get the info directly from Zozo. According to our friends at the National Center for Safe Routes to School, this idea began in 1997 when the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago.  Since 2002, it has become a worldwide event, with schools here in America in all 50 states leading the way for healthier children.  Make sure you get out for Walk to School and walk or ride your bike that day!

For more info, or to register your event that day go to www.walktoschool.org.  In 2009, there were great events in New York City & San Francisco that Streetfilms captured.

NYC Bike Month Montage (2010)

Wanna see a slice of the glorious NYC bike month that was?  There were dozens of great May events from Bike to Work Day in the Bronx to the David Bowie Dance Ride in Manhattan to Bike to School Day at MS51 in Brooklyn. Of course we couldn't get to all of them, but we managed to drop by quite a few extravaganzas.

In this funky montage wrap-up you'll see many special guest stars including Hal Ruzal, Randy "The Ethicist" Cohen, Mary Beth Kelly, and Eben "Bike Snob" Weiss, just to pick out some of the dozens of faces.  But none so special as an appearance by our very good purple friend - Zozo, who you'll get to see out scooting on his bike!

And for heaven's sake, don't miss the "bike rockstar montage" near the end.  We certainly have a lot of hip cyclists in NYC.
