London’s Low Traffic Neighborhoods (LTN’s) Ultimate Resource Page

What are Low Traffic Neighborhoods?

If you want to learn more about London’s LTN’s you came to the right place. After all, Sreetfilms has by far the most-watched and biggest collection of videos in the world. So we’ve decided to compile them (and other resources) on one page!

The film below is our most comprehensive and you’ll hear from copious experts about what a LTN is, the benefits it brings and what it means to live & travel inside of one.

A bike/pedestrian-friendly high street

The next videos dive deeper into many of the treatments seen in our ultra-sized first production. In London a main street in a town that’s where many businesses are often is referred to as a “high street”. The first we discovered was Church Street in West London which uses a bus gate (in effect 7 a.m.–7 p.m.) that restricts cars but allows buses entry makes it a pedestrian-friendly shopping and residential area. Take a look!

A beautiful school street in Kensington

London has plentiful school streets but the vast majority are car-free, camera-controlled closures of about an hour at arrival and pick-up times near schools. This unique one around a cricket stadium encompasses about half the roads that encircle it. Now that’s impressive!

Nice visuals of various LTN treatments

Here you can see stills of some of the best maps we featured in our London LTN film saga. All credit goes to Solomon Green-Eames who crafted them quickly with little notice. Bus gate treatments. Diagonal modal filters. Completely car free ares. It gives you just a tiny taste of how a few neighborhood traffic changes can yield safety and quiet for its residents.

In the last 15 years London has become a great bicycling mecca!

I made an extremely popular Streetfilm on bicycling in London. There are many awesome, rush-hour-packed, w-i-d-e bike lanes in London, but watch the film and you’ll hear from riders who say some of the most pleasant places to ride are where there are usually no lanes: the low traffic neighborhoods. Why? Peaceful and quiet. And you’re not confined to a specific space.

Want a mini-town square? Stop the thru traffic!

This film I started putting together on the long plane ride home. I just found how amazing it was that one modal filter could completely change this intersection. It’s featured here much more extensively than in the anchor film above.

Open Plans has you covered

Whether you live in New York City, London or the thousands of cities that could use a nice dose of LTN’s, Open Plans has ample resources to aid in your organization’s quest. (Or even if it is just you!)

This page will get you started, but what I feel is the most impressive is this 72-page presentation that’s as comprehensive as it gets. I hope your interest is piqued, let’s get to work making cities better.

Clarence Eckerson

Clarence has been documenting advocacy transportation for over ten years and has produced more than 1,000 videos for Streetfilms. He is frequently referred to as “the hardest working man in transportation show biz” for his dedication to making difficult, wonky concepts more accessible and entertaining to the general public.
